At different stations students learned about money management. They received assigned jobs, spent their income, registered their expenses, and updated the balances of their checkbooks. When participants ran out of money, they got a second—or third—job!

Through Welcome to the Real World! students learn: how spending influences quality of life, how education impacts income, and how budgeting—and planning—can increase available money.

Several PHS seniors won prize drawings at the Graduate Hiring Fair. We thank these organizations and the Pontotoc County Chamber/Main Street Association for providing these prize drawing opportunities for our seniors.

The Pontotoc County Chamber/Main Street Association sponsored a Graduate Employment Fair for all seniors in the Pontotoc City and County Schools on April 28th at the Gateway Pavilion in Pontotoc.  Many businesses and industries were on hand to inform students about local jobs that are available to them for long term employment, summer employment, or employment while they attend college. Students had resumes in hand and were ready to approach potential employers and have conversations.

Wearing a tie may be called for in various events throughout life - job interviews, weddings, graduations, etc. Knowing how to tie a tie is definitely a life skill that students need to know. We thank Dr. Ensley Howell of the Pontotoc MSU Extension Office for coming to teach our College and Career Readiness students the skill of tying a tie, so they will be prepared for dressing their best for employment or social events. Students had a great time learning how to tie both Windsor and quick knots with Dr. Howell and their classmates.

This week's Workforce Wednesday speakers were representatives from the Human Resources Department at Southern Furniture Industries, which includes both our local Southern Motion and Fusion Furniture facilities, as well as their other facilities in our surrounding area.  HR representatives were Lee Oswalt, Scott Shempert, and Chris Mattox.  Students learned about skilled training programs that can lead to full time employment with competitive pay and benefits, as well as, the need for skilled workers.

Mr. Dixon's and Mr. Tipler's CCR students gained some great interviewing experience through taking part in mock interviews.  Each student was able to  practice the skills they have been learning in class by dressing professionally, presenting their resume, answering interview questions, asking questions of their interviewer, practicing their interviewing etiquette and body language, and even following up with a thank you email to their interviewer.

Mr. Rob Chittom, Vice President and Branch Manager of First Choice Bank - Ecru Branch, gave College and Career Readiness students an eye opening presentation on budgeting, investing, and building wealth.  Students were shown how to do a budget on a spreadsheet, learned about traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, 401Ks, mutual funds, and how interest on your investments can compound (especially when you start saving early).

Thanks to the work of the Northeast Mississippi Youth Foundation, Churches United Food Depot of Pontotoc County received $460 in grant funding toward its mission of providing nutritional food to county residents who are in need.  Dawson Suggs and Joseph Henry, two NEMYF members from PHS, were recently on hand for the presentation during the NEMYF annual press conference in Tupelo.
